In his powerful TED Talk at TED2025, Stanford neuroscientist Dr. Nolan Williams presents a compelling case for the therapeutic potential of ibogaine, a plant-derived psychoactive compound, in treating a range of severe mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety.

Williams begins by drawing an analogy to scurvy treatment in the 18th century: despite citrus fruit’s clear ability to prevent and cure scurvy, entrenched biases delayed its adoption, costing countless lives. He uses this story to highlight how modern science sometimes dismisses plant-based medicines too quickly and at great human cost.

At the heart of his talk is Williams’ work with veterans suffering from traumatic brain injuries and associated PTSD. He shares results from early research indicating dramatic improvements in symptoms after medically supervised ibogaine treatment, with many participants experiencing sharp reductions in PTSD, anxiety, and depression. His talk includes personal testimony from a veteran who, after years of struggle, found a turning point following ibogaine therapy.

Williams also discusses how many people undergoing ibogaine treatment report a unique review of life memories, seeing past experiences from a detached perspective that helps them confront and reframe deep emotional wounds.

Importantly, he stresses that ibogaine is not a magic cure, rather, it can be a catalyst that opens the door for lasting healing when paired with ongoing psychological work and support. He also emphasizes the need for medical supervision due to known cardiac risks and advocates for open-minded, evidence-based evaluation of psychedelic medicines rather than reflexive dismissal.

Williams closes with a call to action: challenging the scientific community and policymakers to reconsider outdated biases and advance rigorous research, so treatments like ibogaine can be fairly assessed and, if proven safe and effective, offer hope to millions.
